Some maintain the sports aspect while others center around searching for items. The missions themselves vary in their enjoyment. Raise your Sporting Rank to unlock new and varied activities like BMX, mini-golf, cricket, volleyball, fishing and more. Even though they have character and are distinct, conversations lack the humor and frivolity which made their previous release so endearing. Characters are positioned throughout to give small quests to aid you in your mission. The simple system of three hits is borrowed from the latter: first you decide the line of fire, then the power and finally the precision. These few elements are enough to understand how Sidebar Games wanted to make the surreal humor of Earthbound its own, inserting it into a sports formula that looks to the light-hearted tone and simplicity of Mario Golf. Said and done: the protagonist decides to leave his wife – or his wife leaves him: it’s a long-standing debate among Golf Story fans – and to embark on an adventure that will see him tackle eight nine-hole golf courses, sometimes populated by hordes of undead. Golf Story centered on a boy’s rise through the ranks of the noble game of golf who, out of the blue, nostalgically recalls the lessons his father had taught him as a child: the most important was to watch out for geese, capable of unspeakable atrocities (including putting on the putting line). Though you come there to play golf, it’s not long before you start getting swept up into academies and competitions in a whole host of other sports. Travel by train, helicopter and houseboat as you explore dungeons, abandoned ruins and the mysterious Wildlands. Sports Story follows your character from Golf Story going on a scenic trip with their coach and friends to an island that evidently has a lot of budget for sporting activities. Sports Story isn’t a bad game by any means, but it is a supremely disappointing one considering what it could have been. After over five years, this hotly anticipated sequel has finally arrived, shadow-dropped two days before Christmas, and… well, it’s alright. To capitalize on this newfound success, Sidebar Games soon announced a sequel, Sports Story, which would be expanding the gameplay to other sports like BMX biking, soccer (no, it’s not called football), and tennis.
